Summer tips to keep your pet safe

Summer Safety Tips for Pets

Summer is just around the corner and although there’s plenty of fun to be had enjoying the sunshine with your family and pets, but it’s important to keep safety in mind. Below are a few tips for keeping your furry best friend safe all summer long:

  • Protect Against Sunburns: It’s not always something pet owners think about but animals can get sunburned too! If you’re planning on spending the day outdoors with your pup it’s a good idea to apply sunscreen to his nose and ears. Contact your veterinarian to discuss the safest sunscreen for your pet.
  • Take Caution to Avoid Heatstroke: Heatstroke is a serious danger for both people and pets and can cause irreversible brain damage or death. To prevent this tragedy, it’s a good idea to do outdoor summer playtime in the early morning or evening to avoid the hottest part of the day. Never leave your pet in a parked car, even with the windows cracked. Owners of puppies or elderly pets should take extra caution on hot days.
  • Prevent Parasites: Fleas, ticks and mosquitos are out in full force during the warmer months. For this reason, make sure you’re keeping up with a monthly flea preventative like K9 Advantix or Frontline Plus to avoid pesky infestations and dangerous disease.
  • Provide Plenty of Water: Your pet should be able to easily access cool water at all times on a hot day. This will help keep your lovable companion safe from dehydration and heat exhaustion.

If you notice vigorous panting, dark gums, collapse or disorientation- immediately get your pet out of the sun and contact your pet’s veterinarian.
