Interesting Polar Bear Facts

In Latin, Ursus Maritimus, means ‘maritime bear’ and represents the polar bear (also known as the ‘sea bear’) The polar bear is the largest land predator and they live in the far north.   • Male bears weigh 700-1200 lbs
  • Female bears weigh 300-650 lbs
  • Russians call polar bears, belie medved (meaning white bear)
  • Frustrated bears will hurl snow, kick ice and slap the ground
  • Polar bear hair is transparent (not white as it appears) much like snow, it traps and scatters light
  • Polar bears have black skin with a thick layer of fat
  • Polar bear paws are about 12″ in diameter
  • Tiny bumps cover polar bear paws to help with gripping
  • Polar bears are as smart as apes
  • Head wagging is a sign of a playful polar bear
  • Cub licking is a way of grooming, adult polar bears use snow and ice to clean themselves
