National Hug Your Cat Day

Pamper Your Purrfect Pet!
NAPPS Encourages the Celebration of Cat Companions in Honor of National Hug Your Cat Day

America’s most popular pet has rightfully earned its reputation as being a loyal companion. Most cat lovers will agree that the company of their cat offers reassurance and relaxation, and can easily reduce stress and anxiety.

“Simply petting a cat will offer comfort, reduce stress and lower your cholesterol,” said John D’Ariano, president of NAPPS. “As a result, it’s no wonder that pet parents tend to be in better health compared to those without pet companions.”

NAPPS encourages pet parents to take the opportunity to celebrate faithful friend. Consider these tips for showing your appreciation:

Reward your cat with his favorite treat or a new toy—filled with catnip!
Change is good! Be sure to routinely refresh your cat’s litter box and dispose of waste
Schedule a visit with your vet and be sure all of Fluffy’s vaccinations are up to date
Who says manicures and pedicures are just for the parents?! Give your kitty a fresh look by carefully filing his claws
Join your favorite four-legged friend for a well-deserved cat nap on your favorite chair
For prospective pet parents: visit your local animal shelter and consider adopting a cat
NAPPS reminds pet parents that sometimes less is more. Celebrate your cat without overwhelming him. A simple scratch under the chin and a welcoming lap can be just what he needs to feel loved and appreciated.

“Cats can be very independent and often prefer their own company and their own space,” added D’Ariano. “It’s important for pet parents to be aware of their cat’s comfort zone and recognize when human attention is unwanted.”

About NAPPS: NAPPS is the only national nonprofit trade association dedicated to serving the needs of professional pet sitters. The Association aims to help the pet owning public, those interested in pet sitting, and professionals engaged in the in-home pet care industry by fulfilling its vision statement, serving as "the most respected authority in professional pet sitting." Kitty Cat Apps Review

Cat Apps Review – Guest Post, Lynn Jackson

The great thing about cats is they’re self-reliant. You don’t have to take them on walks three times a day, they ration their food,  and they’re super smart with a litter box. While having your freedom from your pet has its benefits, after a long day away from Whiskers, you’re bound to grow a bit cat-sick.

So if another full day away from your feline friend sounds like complete misery, why not celebrate your favorite breed on-the-go? I’m not talking about video chatting with your cat, because that’s just weird. But I am recommending the top ten feline friendly iPhone apps for satisfying all of your cat cravings.

Talking Tom Cat

Tom is your very own virtual pet cat. This friendly street cat repeats everything you say in his silly tom cat voice. He also responds to your pets and pokes, and if he’s being particularly naughty, you can snatch his tail. The app allows you to record and save videos of Tom saying whatever dialogue you give him. Talking Tom Cat not only appeals to cat lovers, but also to children and adults with whacky senses of humor.

Talking Tom is one of the top twenty-five free apps on both Apple and Android markets. The lowly street cat seems to be headed straight for fame, as he’s recently been signed with the legendary William Morris-Endeavor agency for potential book, toy and movie deals. See how he’s living large in Talking Tom Cat 2, where he’s graduated from his grungy street home to a comfortable house with lavender walls. The app sequel features customizable accessories for Tom (hats, sunglasses, earrings, etc), five new language capabilities, and improved performance.

Twitkitteh

In the same vein as Catbook, Twitkitteh is the Twitter for Cats. This app barely even requires human intervention, as a multipaw interface allows cats to “tweet” insights (such as “Iz much harder to write funny capshuns without pikshur”).

               Cat Paint

In case you don’t have any photos with your pet cat, Cat Paint allows you to add a wide variety of cats and kittens to any of your photos – kind of like virtual stickers. You can save your kitty creations to your phone or share them with your friends.

Cat Training

While dog training tends to be a bit more difficult, cat training can pretty much be summarized in a single mobile app. iPhone’s Cat Training app provides useful tips for standard training (including litter box, scratching, clawing, and climbing), maintenance (like clipping their nails), and advanced commands (sit and stay are no longer just for dogs!).

Catbook

If you’re friends made fun of you for setting up a Facebook for your cat, you can now share proudly on Catbook, the mobile Facebook for Cats!

              Pet First Aid

The Pet First Aid app is your virtual vet. It provides you with invaluable information concerning keeping your pet healthy, administering medication, keeping up on vaccinations, as well as what to do in emergency situations. When it comes to your pet’s health, be safe. This app could save your cat’s life.

Petfinder

In case one cat isn’t enough, Pet Finder offers a database of over 13,000 shelters and rescue groups. With Petfinder, you’re not just getting a new cat companion, you’re saving a precious feline life.

iRate Cats

A long day at the office often warrants some zone out time at the end of the day. If you’ve still got a long bus ride home to your sweet pet kitten, visit iRate cats to pass the time with cuteness. iRate cats is an interactive slideshow of adorable cats. You simply rate and comment on the cuteness of each cat; you can even upload a picture of your own!

Paw Card

Paw card allows you to record all of your cat’s (and other pets’) medical information, including vaccinations, medications, tag numbers, and weight. You can easily pass on this information to veterinary board exam certified vets or pet sitters.

Cat Guide

If you love your cat, but can’t yet call yourself a cat connoisseur, than Cat Guide may be just the app for you. The app defines every breed of cat, from Tabby to Siamese, with specific info on each  breed’s character, personality, and general maintenance requirements.

Kitty Cat Named Tinker Helps Keep Things in Perspective

Maybe Cats Really Do Know The Meaning Of Life  - Guest Blog

Our cat Tinker became part of our family many years ago and it didn't take long for her to teach us all about the meaning of life. Sometimes as you grow up and the hustle and bustle of life takes over you really do start thinking that the meaning of life is to somehow find more hours in the day, or to be better at making shopping lists or, come to think of it, remembering to take your shopping list to the shops at all! In between canteen duty and the children's sporting commitments and helping lovely husband with work issues sometimes I feel like I can't keep up.

Just as I am about to turn into the frazzled housewife, along comes Tinker to give me her thoughts on the meaning of life AND, might I add she never lets me down. When she sees me frazzled she jumps straight on my lap and will just refuse to move, BUT I know what she is really doing is saying stop, sit and just catch up – maybe even have a cup of tea and re-gather. Just sitting there patting her helps me calm down and I do in-fact recharge. I need her to remind me sometimes. She keeps it all so simple and she's right, as at that moment the meaning of life message was to calm down. I got up after 'regathering' and of course stroking Tinker and I felt so much better and even clear headed.

Tinker also helps on the deeper issues too. We moved out of the family home after twelve years to a county some fifteen miles away. It was incredibly hard and sad as it had been our family home where we had raised our children from when they were born but, we just had to have more room as the children got older. I was so sentimental about our old house and so wanting to stay there believing fully that the meaning of life should be holding onto things we love and keeping it all the same. Whilst I knew intellectually we needed more room my heart was not in it at all. After me finally realizing that maybe the meaning of life is to move with the times we made the move but, after a week of settling into our new abode (even though my heart not in it at all) Tinker went missing. I was bereft and after sticking posters up and telling our neighbours we still had no Tinker after two months. I tried to settle in and love our new home but I just knew I was romanticising about the good times in the old home and of course missing Tinker too. Little did I know that Tinker was teaching me another lesson about the meaning of life I'm sure. As the next day the phone rang with the people that bought our old house saying that they had Tinker. I couldn't believe it and we were all so happy. We went straight over to pick her up but little did I know that I was to learn more about the meaning of life than I expected. After all the excitement about having her back died down and we drove off, I also realised just how much I needed to see the old house again to truly embrace moving on and start loving our new home.

Tinker and I both felt much better once we got home and ready to start a fresh. Tinker really is so special as I need these reminders about the meaning of life, I need help when I'm frazzled or being stubborn and she's always quickly by my side to make me stop and think. We humans really are so lucky to have our animal friends and if we let them they really can help us see the meaning of life.

Bio for Mel I love my children and my husband but a very close third is my beloved Tinker! Often while Tinker is teaching me yet another lesson and I am forced to stop and recharge I ponder the difference between the animal condition and the human condition.

Kitty cats are known to want to chase and 'play' with birds.  In fact, birds are many time the prey for stalking kitties.  But here are some videos that reflect cats being protective over their feathery little friends.  I could not let Abigail have a bird as her pet. I just couldn't trust she wouldn't mistake it for her toy she needed toss, chase and bat around.  These cats have a much different reaction so I wanted to post!  They are too cute!

This kitty looks a little annoyed, but still very tolerant!

Generic Medication for Treating Heartworm

Why Generic for Treating Heartworm?

Guest Post

Let's face it, for many of us financial worries are ever present. And it makes it really rather difficult to be able to protect our pets from common problems that require medications. Most important of all is a monthly heartworm medication to prevent heartworm disease. Luckily, over the past few years, there have been a number of discount options brought to the market-place, and they are known as generics. Many people have misconceptions about anything known as a generic, thinking it will be inferior is some way. Today, I want to clear up any doubts about using such options, and to show that it is, in fact, the best approach to take for many people.

What Is A Generic

A generic of any medication is simply a single, or series, of active ingredients sold under a different name to the original brand they were licensed under. When a company brings a product to market they hold exclusive rights to the medication for a set period of time. After this period of time expires then other companies are free to develop their own products, with the exact same ingredients and ratios, and market it under a different brand. Normally these newer products are known as generics. The main thing to bear in mind is that they are in no way inferior. Let's take Nuheart heartworm medicine as an example. This is a generic version of Heartgard for Dogs. It contains the same active ingredient, in this case Ivermectin, and may come packaged differently. But the one thing we have to bear in mind is that it will offer the exact same protection against heartworm disease.

We may not get such fancy packaging, but the cost is about half, so it is perfect for those of us trying to save money, and trying to care for our pets. So if heartworm disease is a concern then be sure to take a look at the cheaper options, as well as the more branded products, it could save you a small fortune. And you will then be able to feel safe and secure about your Dogs health, knowing they will never develop heartworm disease.

Just be sure that all animals are heartworm disease free before beginning a course of medications. You can get a simple test performed by the Vets, and then you know it is safe to medicate. The American Heartworm society then recommends that a heartworm medicine be given each and every month of the year. In this way we ensure that our pets are definitely going to stay healthy and never be put at risk.

Karen runs http://www.tatochip.com/ where she allows here beloved Pets Tato and Chip to talk about many different pet medications. Although the Dog and Cat get on rather well, she does have to ensure they get their share of treats every day, if she wants them to keep on writing that is.

5 Tips for a Healthy Kitty Cat

Top 5 Tips For Better Health For Your Cat

Cats: Mans Real Best Friend

You and your cat have a special relationship. You wait on it hand and foot while it makes a special place in your heart. Nothing beats the feeling of coming home from an extremely long day of work to your little buddy purring at you and circling your legs. You play the most important role in the life your cat. You are responsible to clean up after it, feed it and make sure that it is healthy. Your cat will also need your assistance in its quest to destroy the ever-elusive red dot that that has been tormenting it for years.

Most people think that just feeding their cat is enough to be a good cat owner. While this will suffice on a surface level, there are some other things that are required to ensure that it lives as long and healthy of a life as possible. The healthier that your cat is the more enjoyment and companionship you will get from it so it really is a win-win for both of you. Here are 5 important tips that you can use to ensure that your cat lives the best and healthiest life that it can!

· Regular Vet Visits – Taking your cat to the doctor for regular visits is as important to their health as it is for a human. You may think that your cat does not have any problems. They cannot tell you if they are sick or hurting in some way. A veterinarian will be able to recognize and treat many problems that you may not even know that your cat is having.

· Spayed Or Neutered – A cat that is not spayed or neutered can be a terror around your house. It causes them to spray and become aggressive with cats and other animals they come across. Having your cat fixed is essential to ensuring that they live a life without frustrations.

· Flea Treatment – Fleas and parasites can be a huge nuisance to your kitty. They can also lead to your cat becoming sick if they are not treated as soon as possible. There are many grocery delivery services that will deliver these products directly to your home to make it convenient for you to ensure that your cat is not a host to unwanted insects.

· Give Them Love – Like people, cats need a little attention every now and then to be happy. Make sure that you pet your cat often, talk to it and even pick it up for hugs from time to time. A little attention definitely goes a long way. There are many cats that do not like to be picked up. Try picking up your cat often when it's a kitten. This will ensure that they become more accepting of it as they age.

· Give Them Healthy Food and Treats – Also like humans, cats enjoy a little treat now and again. It's also important to ensure that you are feeding them healthy cat food to prevent them from becoming obese or having heart problems. These products can also be conveniently delivered to your home by a grocery delivery service to make it easier for you.

These are just some of the tips that you can use to make sure that you cat leads a healthy and productive life — or at least as productive as cat's life can be! By giving them attention, entertaining them and helping them be as healthy as possible you ensure that your cat will be getting the most out of you as an owner. In turn, you will get the most out of having a cat at the same time.

Maire is in love with her cat, Walter. She also loves to write and blog on the behalf of MyGofer and other quality products.

Kitty Cat Loves Horse

Wow, it has been too long since I have posted to our blog.  My hard drive started crashing several months ago, and finally hit the brick wall last week.  I just got my computer back and am so excited to be chatting it up on Twitter (@lisaillman).  I have to work around Miss Abigail's schedule of course, her paws have been non stop tweet generators since the puter arrived.  (@KritterKondo)  It took me two days to get through all the Stumbles we had waiting, and below was in one of the recommendations under the category cats.  I love to see animals hanging out together, especially unlikely couples.  I love how this kitty rolls all over the back of the horse.  He just loves being up there, and clearly enjoys being on camera!  Enjoy.

Eye Exams for Service Dogs for the Month of May 2012

Meridian, ID — Guide dogs, handicapped assistance dogs, detection dogs and search and rescue dogs selflessly serve the public. So, for the month of May 2012, the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) is launching the 5th annual ACVO/Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam Event to help serve these dogs and other service animals who dedicate their lives to serving the public. More than 200 board certified veterinary ophthalmologists throughout the U.S., as well as Canada and Puerto Rico, are estimated to provide free sight-saving eye exams to thousands of eligible service animals.  Registration for service animal owners and handlers begins April 1, 2012 at www.ACVOeyeexam.org

Since the program launched in 2008, more than 10,500 service animals have been examined.  In addition to dogs, other service animals including horses and even a service donkey named Henry (pictured below) received free sight saving exams.  Henry is a therapy donkey who travels thousands of miles with Young’s Funny Farm (a home for therapy animals) to visit hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and special needs facilities to help bring a smile to patients.  A few months prior to the 2011 event, his owner discovered he had an eye injury which ultimately stole his sight in one eye.  His free eye exam in May 2011 was to ensure that his other eye is working just fine and he will be able to continue his mission of helping others.

WHAT VETERINARY OPHTHALMOLOGISTS LOOK FOR DURING THE EXAM:
During the complete ocular exam, the veterinary specialists look for problems including:  redness, squinting, cloudy corneas, retinal disease, early cataracts and other serious abnormalities.  Early detection and treatment are vital to these working animals.  “Our hope is that by checking their vision, we will be able to help a large number of service animals better assist their human friends,” says Stacee Daniel, Executive Director of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.

A sampling of groups served since the ACVO/Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam Event launched in 2008 include:  Transportation Security Agency (TSA) and military working dogs from Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, Puppies Behind Bars, an organization providing psychiatric service dogs to soldiers coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan, local fire, rescue and police agencies, and also individual service dog owners and handlers who rely on these amazing animals daily.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR THE 2012 EVENT:
To qualify, animals must be “active working animals” that were certified by a formal training program or organization or currently enrolled in a formal training program. The certifying organization could be national, regional or local in nature. Owners/agents for the animal(s) must FIRST register the animal via an online registration form beginning April 1, 2012 at www.ACVOeyeexam.org  Registration ends April 30th.  Once registered online, the owner/agent will receive a registration number and will be allowed access to a list of participating ophthalmologists in their area and may contact a specialist to schedule an appointment. Appointments will take place during the month of May.  Times may vary depending on the facility and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

About the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists
The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists® is an approved veterinary specialty organization of the American Board of Veterinary Specialties, and is recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association.  Its mission is “to advance the quality of veterinary medicine through certification of veterinarians who demonstrate excellence as specialists in veterinary ophthalmology.” To become board certified, a candidate must complete a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, a one year internship, a three year approved residency and pass a series of credentials and examinations.

Sponsors of the ACVO/Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam Event include:  Merial, Ocu-Glo Rx Canine Vision Supplement, Welch Allyn, Aventix, Eye Care for Animals, as well as many non-profit supporters including the American Veterinary Medical Association, most state veterinary medical associations in the U.S. and Canada, American Society of Veterinary Medical Association Executives, and other national service animal organizations.
