KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE!

Coyotes attacking cats and small dogs, and now people is becoming increasingly more frequent. Below is some information to help you and your pets protect yourself against coyotes.

A: There are a number of things you can do to prevent your small pet (cat or dog) from being attacked by a coyote.

Keep pets indoors at dusk and dawn. Dusk and dawn are the two times during the day coyotes roam the most

Get an outdoor pet enclosure to keep your pet from roaming or running away. Never leave your pet alone in the enclosure, but use it as a way to make sure your pet does not run away and into the wild.

Feed your pets indoors. Or if you feed them outdoors do so during the day and never leave pet food out at night. (food attracts other rodents, small animals and varmints which in turn attracts coyotes)

Make sure trash is not left outside in bags and that all trash cans have secure lids with locking mechanisms. Secure the cans to a fence or wall with rope or elastic cord so the trash cannot be tipped over

Install motion sensitive lights in your back yard and around your house.

Don’t leave fruit, berries or compost on the ground or uncovered.

Don’t overflow birdfeeders. Hang them high or in areas that are not accessible to coyotes.

NEVER feed coyotes.

You can install one or more 7 foot or higher posts with a platform at the top for cats to use as an escape from coyotes. The posts need to be made of a material that the cats can climb. When being chased by a predator a cat can climb the post and sit on the platform until it is safe to decend and the coyote is gone.

Clear brush and vegetation to remove habitat for small animals that may attract coyotes and to remove areas where coyotes can hide while stalking their prey.

Always keep pets on a leash when walking in parks, forest areas or in residential areas.

Most recently, 4 roaming cats were killed by coyotes in a quiet Florida neighborhood. Shortly after this attack, 3 cats were taken by coyotes in Massachusetts. Coyotes have recently been spotted roaming New York’s Central Park. A Chihuahua puppy in Colorado was taken by coyotes only to be saved by a neighbor’s pit bull. And who can forget Daisy, Jessica Simpson’s 5 year old maltipoo that was snatched by a coyote right in front of her eyes.

Our precious cats and dogs long to be outdoors, at least part of the time. Kritter Kommunity Kondos are the purr-fect solution. Designed for use anywhere outdoors including courtyards, balconies, campgrounds, beaches, hotels, parks and front or backyards, Kritter Kondos measure 2 feet tall by 2.5 feet wide by 5.5 feet long and will keep your pet safely enclosed while outdoors. This pet enclosure is ideal for up to three cats and small dogs, 35 pounds and under – the same types of pets that are generally the target of coyote attacks.

What is trending that Kritter Kommunity loves?

Social Media, especially Twitter and Facebook; what a great way to hear the voice of your customer direct! I used both to generate on-line buzz about my product but even more importantly to get feedback from the end-users to learn what else they would like to see from Kritter Kommunity.

What is one tool that helps you bring good things to life?

The tool I used to help me launch my business and first product was Twitter. It was ideal because I could post photos to get feedback, tweet with other pet lovers to develop relationships with customers, tweet with other industry professionals to network and host Twitter Contests to generate a “buzz” . Twitter has been a good friend to me, I highly recommend it to any business.

-keeping cats off kitchen countertops

Cat lovers who also have culinary skills in the kitchen may struggle with their favorite feline lounging around the stove or napping on the counters. The warmth an oven and appliances generate is very attractive to a cat. It can be comfortable, but beware; it can also be dangerous for a cat. Not only are there hot items to pounce on accidentally, there could be toxic cleaning residue on the counters or left out that can be harmful to your cat. There are also reasons you might not want your cat on the cabinets including cat hair in your food and the threat of a cat walking into your masterpiece meal during preparation.

Below are a few suggestions for keeping your kitty away from food preparation and off countertops.

Water Bottle

Using ONE QUICK spray of water can teach your cat not to jump on the counter. Please note, this is not a favorite with many feline owners because it re enforces an overall dislike for water which can make giving a bath absolute torture

Loud Sound

This could be a horn or loud boom. The biggest problem with this solution is that the cat can jump up when you are not around to make the loud noise.

Aluminum Foil

Lining your counter tops with aluminum foil can be an almost absolute deterrent for cats jumping on counters. They dislike the sound walking on aluminum foil makes, and they do not like the feeling of the foil on their paws. This will keep their paws on the floor and out of your pasta dish!

Cat Enclosure

A favorite among cat owners is an enclosure that can offer your kitty a comfortable area to watch you cook while staying off the counter tops and out from underneath your feet! Check out the Kritter Kondo, an enclosure that can be used indoors and outdoors. It’s collapsibility and carrying case make it easy to store and very mobile. The Kritter Kondo measures approximately 2.5’W x 2.0H x 5.5L giving your cat enough space to lounge around comfortably while watching you in the kitchen! Added bonus, the Kritter Kondo is also an outdoor enclosure so kitty can enjoy fresh air and sunshine safely. More information can be found at www.kritterkommunity.com

Lisa:

Hi Mike, and thank you for the opportunity to share my story with you today.

I realized I had a pet product many cat owners would like pretty early on. My courtyard acts as a showcase for people walking around my neighborhood; so putting the cats in their Kondos outside was much like displaying adorable kittens in a pet store window. People stop, stare, ask questions, ooh and ahhh. After answering for the 5th or 6th time, “where did you get those, my cats would love one”?, I started to make a few calls. After realizing there is a market for these Kitty Kondos, small dog owners started asking me where they could get one….. hence the name Kritter Kondo instead of Kitty Kondo.

Andrea is one of our Twitter Friends enjoys tweeting about current events, pets and just for fun! Andrea loves to play Twitter Contests and recently won our $15.00 CatToys.com gift certificate Summer Fun Contest by Direct Mailing us that CATS IN NEED is her favorite Animal Rescue…. after reading about her furballs, one can see why :<) xoxoxo

Here is what Andrea writes about her Kritter Litter.

We got Aurora first. She was five weeks old. She was adopted from a dog trainer at Pet Smart! If I had to do it all over again I would have waited longer before bringing her home because she has behavior and hygiene issues now. She’s not very nice, but she’s smart and does tricks so I love her very much. We got Ariel next because Aurora was quite a handful when she got to be about twelve weeks old. She was biting and being mean! Ariel mellowed her out for the most part because she is one of the sweetest most gentle cats ever. She’s my heart! She was originally supposed to have been my husband’s cat, but when they put her in his arms, she headbutted me when they took the adoption picture of us! Ariel was adopted from Cats in Need, Yorba Linda! Bond came from the Westminster Petco. He was supposed to have been a dog, but we got a doglike cat instead. He is beautiful! He was hanging in a little hammock when we came to bring him home. His brother had chewed off all of his whiskers! Now his whiskers are probably about four or five inches long. He was named after James Bond because of his huge gold eyes and snazzy tuxedo coat!

My name is Tiger, I am a male, orange, tiger striped tabby. My Mom and Dad adopted me from a friend of a friend when I was just a kitteh. I have lived here with them for 7 years! Wow, gettin old. My favorite food is tuna, oh and bits of mommy’s steak! I like to nap on my mommy’s belly, of course! And I like any toy that has enough catnip to smell, some say catnip, but they lie!

Tiger is @ChloeToby on Twitter! He recently won our Kritters that Twitter contest: a $15.00 Gift Certificate.

Leave Tiger a comment and ask him what he bought with his certificate, or just say hi!
